New Zealand’s Tim Southee’s participation in the World Cup is doubtful

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee is scheduled to undergo surgery on his thumb, making his participation in the World Cup doubtful.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said a decision on Southee’s inclusion in the World Cup, which starts on October 5 in India, will be made next week.

The 34-year-old fractured his thumb while trying to take a catch against England on Friday.

According to news agency AFP, the New Zealand player immediately appeared in pain and left the field for scans and failed to return.

Southee will undergo surgery on Thursday, two weeks before New Zealand’s World Cup opener against champions England.

New Zealand “A decision on the senior fast bowler’s availability for the ICC Cricket World Cup in India will be taken early next week once the results of the surgery are known,” Cricket said.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said Test captain Southee will be given ‘every chance’ to play in the World Cup.

“We are hopeful that the surgery will go well,” Stead said.

The New Zealand team will begin the three-match ODI series in Bangladesh from Thursday.

England won the series 3-1 against New Zealand in the final ODI at Lord’s last week.

It was during this last ODI that South England’s Joe Root suffered an injury while dropping a catch.

‘Tim is certainly a very experienced and important figure in our team. We want to give him every opportunity to be a part of the World Cup campaign.’

The New Zealand team is trying to reach the final of the ODI World Cup for the third time in a row.

Tim has taken 214 wickets in 157 ODI matches.
