New York encourages residents to engage in service, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (SBG file image)

CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) —

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Day– the federal holiday honoring the civil rights activist celebrated on the third Monday of January.

This year the holiday falls on Dr. King’s actual birthday of January 15th, he would’ve been 95 years old.

Dr. King may be best known for his “I have a dream” speech 61 years ago.

He won the Nobel peace prize back in 1964.

He was assassinated four years later on April 4th, 1968.

Dr. King’s holiday celebrates the civil rights leader’s life by encouraging public service.

New York state encouraging New Yorkers to take action in meaningful ways to celebrate Martin Luther King’s legacy.

There are also service events taking place.

Volunteers will be gathering at the Capital District Latinos Community Center to sort and stock donations for those in their community.

And in Saratoga Springs at the public library community groups participating in the day of service through all sorts events from food and clothing donations to writing cards to those hospital patients.

All of these events to answer Dr. King’s call to build a beloved community.
