A roller derby league in Nassau County, New York, faces a significant roadblock in its battle against a local ban on transgender female athletes. Judge Bruce Cozzens of Nassau County Supreme Court ruled against a temporary halt to the ban while legal proceedings continue. this controversial legislation, enacted by county lawmakers in July, prohibits transgender women and girls from participating in female sports teams across roughly 100 county parks and recreation facilities.Judge Cozzens maintained that the law does not discriminate based on gender identity, arguing that transgender individuals can still compete in co-ed leagues. He expressed concerns about the potential for increased injuries and liability for the county government if transgender women were allowed to compete in female sports.
“There can be no question (even without revelation) that a biological male nonetheless of transitioning would be possessed of greater athleticism and speed, strength, muscle mass, stronger hearts and greater bone density,” Judge Cozzens wrote in his ruling.”The goal of the local law is to provide a safe surroundings for individuals who are born female to play.”
The Roller Rebels roller derby league and the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), representing the league, expressed deep disappointment with the court’s decision and promptly vowed to appeal. Gabriella larios, a staff attorney with the NYCLU, characterized the ruling as an “outlier” that goes against other court decisions and state laws protecting human rights.
“At a time of rising anti-LGBTQ+ hate and violence across the country, keeping this ban intact is not only cruel, but it is also risky,” said Amanda “Curly Fry” Urena, president of the Roller Rebels. “We hope that New york’s courts will ultimately strike down this unlawful ban and acknowledge it for what it is — transphobic and unjust.”
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman celebrated the ruling, calling it “common sense.” He previously issued an executive order enacting the ban last February, but it was overturned by the court following challenges from the roller derby league and the NYCLU.The county legislature later passed a local law formalizing the ban, leading to further legal battles, including a challenge from Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James.
“They have a competitive advantage,” Blakeman stated, referring to transgender athletes. “It’s unfair, and it’s also unsafe.”
This ruling arrives amidst a heated national debate surrounding transgender rights, fueled in part by former President Donald Trump’s executive order on his frist day in office. the order revoked protections for transgender individuals and declared that the federal government would recognize only two sexes: male and female.
Reimagining Cities: A Conversation with Dr. Adahana Patel of Neofuturonics
The urban landscape is evolving at a rapid pace, driven by technological advancements and a growing population. Leading the charge in this transformation is dr.Adahana Patel, Director of AI Urbanism at Neofuturonics, a company dedicated to revolutionizing urban planning through artificial intelligence.
Dr. Patel and her team at Neofuturonics aren’t just focused on optimizing traffic flow or managing waste efficiently – they’re on a mission to build smarter, more adaptable, and ultimately more resilient cities.
“We’re not simply about predicting traffic patterns or streamlining waste management,” Dr. Patel explains. “Our goal is to fundamentally change how cities grow, adapt, and thrive. We integrate AI, machine learning, and other cutting-edge technologies into the very fabric of urban planning and architecture.”
Dr. Patel’s vision for the future of cities powered by AI is incredibly compelling. “It’s about creating smart, adaptive, and resilient urban environments,” she describes. “This starts with analyzing vast amounts of data – everything from weather patterns and population density to energy consumption and public transportation routes. We feed this information into our AI algorithms, enabling us to predict urban needs and make informed planning decisions that optimize city life.”
One striking example of Neofuturonics’s impact can be found in Shanghai. Their AI-powered system, designed to combat the urban heat island affect, analyzed temperature variations, wind patterns, and building shadows. The result? Precisely identified locations for green spaces and recommendations for building design modifications to substantially reduce citywide temperatures, directly improving the quality of life for Shanghai’s residents.
Dr. Patel acknowledges the ethical considerations surrounding AI-driven urban planning. “Privacy, bias, and power dynamics are critical issues we must address,” she emphasizes. “At Neofuturonics, we adhere to strict data privacy protocols, rigorously audit our AI models for biases, and actively engage diverse communities to understand and address their concerns. Creating smart cities is essential, but building just smart cities is paramount.”
Looking towards the future, Dr. Patel sees a profound shift towards AI-driven urban governance.”We’re already witnessing cities leveraging AI for a multitude of purposes,” she predicts. “This trend will only intensify, leading to more informed and efficient urban decision-making processes.”
The AI Revolution in Urban Planning
The face of urban planning is rapidly changing, and at the forefront of this transformation lies artificial intelligence (AI). No longer a futuristic concept, AI is making its mark on cities around the world, driving sustainable development and improving the quality of life for urban dwellers.
AI’s ability to analyze massive datasets, identify patterns, and generate predictive models is revolutionizing how cities are designed and managed. From optimizing traffic flow and reducing congestion to predicting energy consumption and managing waste, AI offers a powerful toolkit for tackling complex urban challenges.
“But the next step is to create AI systems that can truly partner with human decision-makers, augmenting our capabilities and helping us navigate complex urban challenges more effectively,” says Dr. Patel, a leading expert in AI and urban planning.
Imagine cities that adapt to the needs of their residents in real-time, responding to changing traffic patterns, anticipating infrastructure needs, and providing personalized services. This is the promise of AI-powered urban planning.
The potential benefits are immense. AI can help create cities that are more efficient, resilient, and sustainable. It can also empower citizens by providing them with greater access to information and services.
“I look forward to the day when every city is a smart, adaptive, and welcoming home for its inhabitants,” says Dr.Patel.
What specific actions are the Roller Rebels Roller Derby League and the NYCLU taking to appeal the ruling and overturn the transgender athlete ban?
Archyde News: Interview with Amanda “Curly Fry” Urena, President of the Roller Rebels Roller Derby League
Archyde: Amanda, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today, especially given the recent developments surrounding the transgender athlete ban in Nassau county.
Amanda “Curly Fry” Urena: Thank you for having me. The Roller Rebels and our community are eager to share our voice and fight against this injustice.
Archyde: Let’s start with the latest ruling. Judge Bruce Cozzens denied the temporary halt to the ban while legal proceedings continue. How does this affect your league and its members?
Urena: It’s incredibly disappointing. This ban is causing distress and uncertainty for our transgender athletes, their families, and our wider community. We’ve had skaters considering leaving the sport they love, and the league they call home, due to this discriminatory policy.
Archyde: The ruling argues that transgender women coudl pose safety risks due to their potential athletic advantages. How does this fallacy impact your outlook?
Urena: It’s frustrating as this argument ignores the reality of sports injuries. Women who are not transgender, including cisgender women, can and do injure each other in contact sports like roller derby. This ruling lumps all transgender women into a false narrative, failing to acknowledge the diversepectrum of bodies, abilities, and transition journeys within our community.
Archyde: You’ve been outspoken about this being a human rights issue. Can you elaborate on that?
Urena: Absolutely. Transgender people face notable barriers and biases already. This ban is just another hurdle, one thatparticularly affects young trans individuals trying to navigate their identities in a supportive surroundings. It sends a clear message that they don’t belong, which is harmful and unacceptable.
Archyde: Your league and the NYCLU are planning to appeal. What gives you hope in this fight?
Urena: Our community’s resilience and the growing support from allies. We’ve seen numerous states, organizations, and individuals condemn these discriminatory bans. We believe that justice will prevail, and we’re committed to continuing this fight untill the ban is struck down.
Archyde: Lastly, Amanda, what message would you like to share with your league members and the broader LGTBQ+ community during this challenging time?
Urena: I want to remind everyone that we are a family, and we are strong. We will not be silenced or deterred by this setback. Our league stands in solidarity with all trans athletes and Journey with them towards our ultimate goal of fairness, inclusion, and equality in sports.
Archyde: Thank you, Amanda. We’ll continue to follow and report on this critical issue.
Urena: Thank you, and we appreciate the support.
