OTTAWA – Alexis Lafrenière helped the New York Rangers edge the Ottawa Senators with the first of a seven-goal streak en route to a 7-2 win Saturday at the Canadian Tire Center .
However, everything seemed to be going well for the Sens following 25 minutes of play.
Joonas Korpisalo looked comfortable in goal, while captain Brady Tkachuk and Jakob Chychrun gave Ottawa a 2-0 lead.
But the Rangers took advantage of lethargic moments from the Sens in the middle period to completely turn the situation around, even chasing Korpisalo from his net.
After Alexis Lafrenière’s goal following 5:51 in the middle period, the New Yorkers followed up with four other goals – all tied in numbers -, those of Chris Kreider, Zac Jones, Jonny Brodzinski and Blake Wheeler.
At 16:54, or 11:03 following the visitors’ first goal, Korpisalo gave way to reserve Mads Sogaard.
Peter Laviolette’s team had the opportunity to close the game in the third period, while the Sens never really gave the impression that they believed in the possibility of a comeback.
Artemi Panarin scored an empty-net goal – his 18th success on the road this season – and Kappo Kaako added insult to injury, 35 seconds following his teammate.
Veteran Jonathan Quick was on duty for the visitors. He made 30 saves to sign his 10th win in 16 outings in his first season in a Rangers uniform.
It’s Panarin’s third point of the evening, who also set up goals from Lafrenière and Jones.
On Tkachuk’s goal, Claude Giroux reached the plateau of 700 career assists.
