Los New York Mets are heading to end the highest payroll in the Major Leagues for the first time since 1989 and are among six teams that will have to pay a penalty. Los Angeles Dodgers started the season with the highest payroll, but fell from the top position due to the suspension of pitcher Trevor Bauer.

New York started the last month with the highest payroll, of $273.9 million, according to information from the MLB on August 31. The Dodgers will pay 267.2 million and the Yankees 254.4 million. The Mets look to win their first World Series title since 1986.

“Expect that the Mets are the last ones to end up standing. There is nothing else. That’s what we strive for every day,” manager Buck Showalter said Sunday.

The ace of the Mets, Max Scherzerwith the highest salary in the Major Leagues 43.3 million, makes five million dollars less than the entire Oakland team. The combined amount of 103 million than Scherzer and his companions Jacob deGrom and Francisco Lindor charge exceeds the expenditure of eight of the 30 teams.

When the Mets were on top of payroll spending last time, their total was 21.3 million. The cost for Dodgers fell with the suspension of two years without pay from Bauer for violating the domestic violence policy. Bauer’s 2022 salary was reduced to $3.8 million from what he was owed at the time.

In 2015, the Dodgers set a payroll record with 291 million. The salaries of Mets have increased since Steven Cohen acquired the team in 2020 from the families Wilpon y Katz.

In terms of the luxury tax, Mets are heading for a record 298.9 million to eclipse the record for Dodgers, 297.5 million. Los Yankees, Philadelphia, Boston y San Diego they will also pay the luxury tax this year.

Only once before have six teams paid luxury tax. This happened in 2016 with the Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, Tigers y Giants. Oakland has the lowest payroll 49 million dollars.
