New York Mets extend pitcher Jacob deGrom’s 60-day IL stay

WASHINGTON — The New York Mets moved Tuesday to Jacob deGrom to the 60-day disabled list, in a decision that would have sought to comply with the procedure and that does not necessarily refer to a progress or regression in his right shoulder blade injury.

deGrom, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, hasn’t pitched this season. He was expected to be out of business until at least June.

By moving the right-handed pitcher from the 10-day injured list to the 90-day IL, the Mets make room on their 40-man roster for left-hander Locke St. John, released by the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets are leaders of the Eastern Division of the National League.

On Tuesday, before the game once morest the Washington Nationals, Buck Showalter, manager of the Mets, spoke to the press but did not give details regarding deGrom’s situation.

The ace went on the disabled list on April 7, the opening day of the season. He was injured in the final stretch of the preseason.

“Everything is going well. I’m not going to get into the business of the doctor or the kinesiologist, but he is where he should be, ”said Showalter, who is in his first year in charge of the Mets. “I’m not going to say if he’s ahead or behind, but they like the way he’s progressing.”

On April 25, the Mets reported that deGrom underwent an MRI and CAT scan. Tests showed the injury was healing.

This month, more tests were due.

deGrom won the Cy Young in 2018 and 19.
