PHILADELPHIA — Max Scherzer struck out eight in six innings and Starling Marte homered to help the New York Mets end a three-game skid with a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
The two teams have been heading in opposite directions since the Mets swept a three-game series at home once morest the Phillies on June 1. The Phillies resumed the course with a record of 14-5 and that put them in the fight for the wild card. The Mets are 4-14 in that span and have gone seven games under .500.
Mets manager Buck Showalter was asked what owner Steve Cohen has said to him because of this lapse.
“He’s always supported us,” Showalter warned before the game.
Cohen must have enjoyed this win.
David Robinson, a former Phillies reliever who received his 2022 National League championship ring before the game, forced Bryson Stott’s groundout into a double play to end the eighth inning. He pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.
For the Mets, the Dominican Starling Marte 4-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor 4-2. Venezuelans Francisco Álvarez 3-0, Luis Guillorme 3-2 with a run scored.
