NEW YORK — Francisco Álvarez hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning and the New York Mets beat the Braves 5-3 for a doubleheader on Monday following the Braves’ star Ronald Acuña Jr. left the second duel with a blow to the shoulder.
Sean Murphy hit a pair of three-run home runs boosting the Braves 9-8 win following the rain prevented them from playing in the previous two days.
In the first game, Acuña’s drive reached 448 feet and landed on the third deck of Citi Field, something rarely seen. The Venezuelan scored three times and lacked the triple to complete the cycle. He started the second game, but was hit by a fastball from Tylor Megill with the count at 0-2.
It was just the second win in eight games for the Mets as they snapped a six-game losing streak once morest National League East rivals. The Braves won the division for the fifth straight year last year following sweeping New York in the final series of the regular season.
Daniel Vogelbach hit an RBI double on the night and Starling Marte a run-scoring single as the Mets went up 2-0.
