In New York, Magazzino Italian Art is hosting a photographic exhibition dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the construction of its headquarters. Marco Anelli’s images reveal the architectural evolution and the work of the artisans who made this project possible.

HAS New Yorkthe Italian Art Warehouse will inaugurate on August 23, 2024 a photographic exhibition of Mark Rings dedicated to the construction of the museum, entitled Marco Anelli : Building Warehouse 2014-2024. The exhibition, organized by Paola Wallswill be visible until October 14, 2024 at Robert Olnick Pavilion and presents around fifty large-format photographs, many of which are unpublished, taken by the photographer Mark Rings over the course of a decade.

The images on display document the various stages of the transformation of Magazzino Italian Art, a museum dedicated to post-war Italian art, from a simple project to a concrete reality. Mark Ringsa photographer of Roman origin, had exclusive access to the museum’s construction site, immortalizing not only the architectural details, but also the workers who contributed to its construction. His photographs capture the atmosphere of a usually inaccessible place, capturing the humanity and commitment of the workers who, day after day, participated in the realization of this ambitious project.

The exhibition traces the history of the main building of the Magazzino, a former milk pasteurization plant, transformed in 2017 by the Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo as the seat of the permanent collection of Arte Povera. The photographs continue until the more recent construction of the pavillon Robert Olnickdesigned by Quismondo himself in collaboration with Alberto Campo Baezaintended to host temporary exhibitions and cultural programs.

In addition to documenting the architectural evolution of the Magazzino, Anelli’s work focuses on the artisans and workers who physically built the museum. His images, taken without artificial poses, highlight the human value behind each stage of the work, offering a new and authentic perspective on the construction process.

For Marco Anelli: “These images aim to tell the story of Magazzino through the sense of pride that the women and men experienced in their daily work on the construction site. It was an honour to tell their story and see them transform Magazzino from an idea to a concrete reality”.

Paola Mura, curator of the exhibition, says: “Unlike classic documentation, Anelli’s work offers an unprecedented perspective that only his artistic vision could capture. The photographs are not a simple testimony, but a particular look that reflects his unique approach to the subject. They reveal the journey of the museum, highlighting the inspiring and creative power of art. Anelli’s photographic work reflects his constant search for architecture, the environment and humanity. The photographer presents thought-provoking works that restore the rhythm of work, highlight the often underestimated contribution of workers and recognize their essential role, as well as that of the entire local community.”

Magazzino founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu said, “We are honored to have commissioned this project from Marco Anelli, whose work is as integral to the museum as the structures and exhibition program. It was essential to us that Magazzino be built by and for the people of Putnam County and the surrounding area. We are proud to honor the extraordinary contributions of these individuals with an exhibition that demonstrates how much the museum is their work.”

The exhibition is accompanied by a book, published in 2017 and entitled Marco Anelli : Building Warehousewhich documents the construction of the museum’s first building through 129 color photographs. Anelli, who is originally from Rome but lives in New York, is known for his long-term photographic projects and has explored themes ranging from architecture to music, immigration and sculpture.
