New York City FC used the goals by Peruvian Alexander Callens and Uruguayan Santiago Rodríguez to defeat the Red Bulls in the Hudson River Derby for the second time this season and keep his foot on the gas in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Less than 60 seconds were enough for Callens to open the scoring with his fourth goal of the season and the second once morest the Red Bulls this season. The Peruvian took advantage of a series of rebounds in the rival area to head in and leave the rival goalkeeper without a chance.

The second goal came in the 23rd minute of the game at the feet of Santiago Rodríguez, who was assisted by the Brazilian Gabriel Pereira, who sent a cross into the rival area that, following a series of rebounds, was left for the Uruguayan to define once morest the goalkeeper.

It should be remembered that NYCFC came to this match with fewer rest days since they faced Atlas FC of Liga MX on Wednesday, in the match corresponding to the Champions Cup, which they won 2-0 to maintain dominance of the MLS in that competition.

In this Hudson River Derby, the one with the ‘Boys in Blue’, Sean Johnson went 14 games without conceding, this being the most so far this season and came close to the record for clean sheets (16) set by Tony Meola in 2000.

DT Nick Cushing praises his scorers

After the match ended, City manager Nick Cushing did not hold back his praise for the Peru international defender. “I can’t say enough regarding Alexander Callens (…) In my opinion, he is the best central defender in MLS, in my opinion by far”.

Likewise, he left a little more for the Uruguayan Rodríguez, whom he recognized for his consistency to be part of the triumphs. “I think when you look at MLS and successful teams always have these guys who contribute to wins. The [Santiago Rodríguez] He’s that guy, whether it’s goals or assists.”
