The Hellenism of New Yorkas every year, commemorated the anniversary of the national rebirth with a grand parade in the heart of Manhattan.
5th Avenue acquired a Greek pulse with the Greek expatriates parading to the sounds of marching bands, among them the “Macedonia Xakousti”.
This year’s parade was dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus.
Dozens of expatriate organizations, communities, schools, associations and organizations of Hellenism and thousands of citizens dressed in national costumes and holding Greek flags in their hands filled the streets of New York with blue and white colors, giving a strong presence to the most emblematic event of the Hellenism diaspora.
Everyone’s eyes were drawn to it Insignia of the Presidential Guard’s Ezzones who marched proud and strutting in perfect formation.
More than a hundred organizations with fifty-six floats and eleven philharmonics participated in the parade, among them the Old Corfu Philharmonic who traveled to New York with ninety musicians to accompany the parade and the parallel events organized by the diaspora.
Previously, a eulogy was held in the Holy Cathedral of the Holy Trinity under the patronage of Archbishop Elpidophoros and in the presence of the vice-president of the Hellenic Parliament Yannis Plakiotakisof the president of SYRIZA Stefanou Kasselakisof the New Democracy MEP Vangelis Meimarakisof the deputies Philip Fortoma, Nina Kasimati, Theophilou Xanthopoulos, Milena Apostolaki, Renas Dourouof the ambassador of Greece in Washington Ekaterini Nasikaof the Consul General of Greece in New York Dino Konstantinou and the New Democracy MEP candidate, Giorgos Avtias.
The master of ceremonies for this year’s parade was the Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendiaswho, however, due to the developments in the Middle East, hastily left for Greece on Saturday night.
