New York State Governor Kathy Hochul dispatched emergency personnel from various agencies, including the National Guard, in addition to the team sent to help in the city of Buffalo, the region hardest hit by winter storm Elliot, where two people have died because they did not get the medical attention they needed.
“It’s life-threatening what’s happening in Buffalo,” Hochul said, referring to the city, which has been hit by one of the worst snowstorms that has caused residents as well as service staff and equipment emergencies, have been trapped on the roads. The city had to close the border bridges with Canada.
Ice, floods, snow, temperatures and blackouts have brought Elliot his way through New York, Hochul said, who decreed a state of emergency on Friday and mobilized National Guard personnelwhich had to increase its staff to help in health emergencies and search and rescue operations.
Since Thursday, Elliot, a bomb cyclonic resulting from an arctic air front, has brought freezing temperatures from Canada to Texas, as well as heavy rain and strong winds.
“This (storm) had a huge impact and caused blackout conditions in the western part of the state”added Hochul, who reminded New Yorkers that these conditions in the electrical service have been restored, but there are still families without electricity at times when temperatures reached single digits.
Given the national emergency that has caused nearly 700,000 people to remain without electricitymainly in states such as North Carolina and Maine, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, warned this Friday that citizens should take the storm “extremely seriously”, and urged that the recommendations of the authorities.
