New York ePrix: Vandoorne saved by red flag, Cassidy declared winner

The New York ePrix turned into carnage when the celestial floodgates opened ten minutes from the finish. With the tires copiously worn and almost become slicks, many pilots were scared. The climax was reached when three of the first four started aquaplaning and ended up in the TecPros at the same place!

This is how Nick Cassidy (Envision), Lucas di Grassi (Venturi) and… Stoffel Vandoorne (Mercedes) ended their race prematurely while Robin Frijns (Envision) and Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) avoided the elimination crash in extremis despite either kiss with the wall. Sébastien Buemi (Nissan) and Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) also ended up on the mat.

The red flag was logically raised and given that it would have been necessary to wait too long for the track to be passable once more, the race was not restarted, the classification being fixed for the lap preceding the interruption. Cassidy was therefore declared the winner ahead of Di Grassi and Frijns, Vandoorne saving 4th place ahead of Mortara.

However, having been unable to take full advantage of his front row following being overwhelmed by Di Grassi and Frijns, Vandoorne only gained one point from Mortara who kept a good lead in the championship. The Belgian nevertheless took second place following the rout of Jean-Eric Vergne (Techeetah) who failed in New York.
