“New York comeback”, de Lucinda Williams (con Bruce Springsteen)

WEDNESDAY, SONG

“A song of absolute strength, a fight once morest the grim reaper, a hymn of resistance”

The return of Lucinda Williams, accompanied by Bruce Springsteen in “New York comeback”, dazzles us and becomes our favorite this week in Wednesday, song. By Arancha Moreno.

Text: ARANCHA MORENO.

Immediate flash. The voice of Lucinda Williams rides the drums, with all her wisdom and rawness, and when the chorus arrives, sheltered in the chorus by a warm Bruce Springsteen, we are absolutely in. We travel with them along some country road with the windows rolled down, looking boldly towards the horizon while the guitars flash and the music draws an epic that doesn’t quite explode. It happens in “New York comeback”, the song with which he anticipates his new album, a work that will be released on June 30 through the Highway 20 Records / Thirty Tigers label with the suggestive title Stories from a rock n roll heart.

It gives you goosebumps on first listen, even more so because this new album was created while Lucinda was recovering from a stroke that he suffered at home, in November 2020, for which he spent a season walking with a cane and unable to play the guitar. With music as balm and the support of her closest circle, the wound has healed in this rock comeback, “New York comeback”, a composition that her husband, Tom Overby, and her husband, Tom Overby, helped develop. American composer Jesse Malin. In addition to Springsteen, she also has the participation in the choirs of Patti Scialfa.

A song of absolute strength, a fight once morest the grim reaper, a hymn of resistance. At seventy years old, the great lady of American country and folk music returns with more integrity than ever and asks to have the last word, one last chance, one last song. And she achieves it in this “New York comeback”, a punch on the table that reminds us that Lucinda has a war for a while and that expectation for her new album, produced by herself together with Overby and Ray Kennedy, increases. Undoubtedly, one of her most choral works, as she has also surrounded herself with a handful of illustrious guests, such as Jeremy Ivey, Jesse Malin, Buddy Miller, Angel Olsen, Margo Price and Tommy Stinson. Also, hers old road managerTravis Stephens, has collaborated as a co-writer on six of the songs on Stories from a rock n roll heartwhich sees the light three years following his last studio work, Good souls better angels.

In addition to the flash of Lucinda Williams, other songs make their way and accompany us in the best way these days. Between them, “Yard sale” de Ben Harper junto a Jack Johnson o “Thunder rumbles” de The Cat Empire, but also the new by Elefantes, “El baile”, a version by Izal, and “Opulencia y amen”, by Nacho Vegas. All of them are part of our list this Wednesday.
