New York bans ChatGPT in schools to prevent its use in exams

New York, 6 Jan. The city of New York has banned the use of ChatGPT in its entire public school network, the artificial intelligence chat that has become a success after only a month after its launch, according to various media reports today.

The reason is none other than to avoid its possible use, through tablets and phones of the schools themselves in the classroom, as a “help” tool in exams.

Department of Education spokeswoman Jenna Lyle has released a statement outlining her “concerns about the negative impact on learning and content accuracy” of ChatGPT, a chat generated by a robot capable of answering questions and even writing texts in essay form.

“It does not help critical thinking or (reinforces) problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and life success,” added the person in charge.

Lyle specified that the blocking will not apply to the devices that students bring from their own homes, and also said that the chat system can be studied within a topic on artificial intelligence.

The New York Post newspaper today cites the case of a South Carolina high school teacher who caught one of his students using ChatGPT in an essay on the British philosopher David Hume, describing the result as “what a boy could produce.” very smart 12th grader (equivalent to 17 years)”.

The New York public school network is the largest in the entire country -1,058,888 students in the 2021-22 academic year-, and the decision to block ChatGPT could be replicated in other states. EFE
