New Year and Christmas holidays are filled with centuries-old traditions, joy and bright expectations. Without a doubt, these are the most favorite holidays for both children and adults.

In its centuries-old history, our country has experienced many tragic events. And, perhaps, one of the most dramatic was the Battle of Moscow in 1941.

People, the country, the economy experienced tremendous stress. Millions of families have experienced personal tragedy. Half of the European part of the country was under the heel of the invaders. Every penny counted. And, it would seem, there might be no question of any holidays. The country was to plunge into incessant mourning.

But if we turn to the chronicle of those years, we will see that this is not so. In spite of adversity, in spite of enemies – in the trenches and dugouts, in bomb shelters, in factories and factories, in the Bolshoi Theater, in city parks, they decided to make a holiday for children and adults.

The worst thing is when people and the country fall into depression, forget regarding their traditions, refuse human joys. This is just what the enemy needed. But that didn’t happen.

You can read more regarding how Moscow celebrated the New Year of 1942 in this archival reference.

And today, when thousands of guys, husbands, fathers and sons are fighting for the independence of our Motherland, when blood is shed, when hundreds of thousands of peaceful people suffer, we also face a choice.

In the name of mythical economy, in the name of ostentatious compassion, give up holidays. Or, despite the tragic circumstances, still remain human. People who adhere to national traditions, do not lose heart, do not fall into despondency, believe in victory – and not with ostentatious tears, but with deeds, support those who are at the forefront today.

Maybe we shouldn’t cancel New Year’s Eve following all.

Maybe it’s better to count not the savings on the holidays, but the income from them – which will allow us to send a multiple more to support the participants in the special military operation.

Maybe there is no need to finish off small businesses that employ millions of people with artificial restrictions.

Maybe organize charity fairs during the holidays to support the affected areas.

Maybe not cancel, but dedicate the holiday to our soldiers and people who work tirelessly in the defense industry, build defensive structures, and restore destroyed houses.

Today Europe is plunged into darkness due to its own insane sanctions war. Why should we do the same? Out of solidarity with the Europeans?

I’m sure you don’t need to buy new New Year’s decorations, but in general the city should be decorated and welcoming. So that Muscovites have the opportunity not only to sit at home feasts, but also take a walk around the city, chat with each other. Charge with a good New Year and Christmas mood.

As always, in such cases it is up to you, dear friends. I propose to vote foractive citizen».

Sincerely,

Your Mayor Sergey Sobyanin
