New year, new house: use of suitable materials prevents corrosion in coastal houses

After the increase in the values of materials and labor that are usual in the last months of the year, January and February bring a drop in values that allows putting into practice the plans to renovate the house. Coastal properties have particularities that make them challenging from construction to repair works. The main problem to be overcome is the humidity from the sea air that causes corrosion in the structure, finish and furniture, but with the use of correct materials this problem can be circumvented, ensuring more durability in repairs.

In the list below are some materials that can be used and tips on how to apply them to the structure of the property or design items.

1. Wood – Mainly the hardest, such as teak, ipe, maçaranduba or pine wood, following being sanded and varnished, they can be used as pilasters, tables, headboards, chairs, benches and support furniture, such as desks.

2. PVC – Simple to clean, PVC parts can be used in ceilings and pipes.

3. Glass – The main disadvantages of glass are costs and cleaning, as with the sea air it can look greasy. However, it brings benefits that other materials fail to promote. The glass does not burn, does not oxidize, allows light to enter the environment, can be reinforced if necessary and combines with different styles of decoration.

4. Stainless steel – Resistant to rust, stainless steel collaborates with industrial-style decor and can be used in household appliances, such as refrigerators, stoves and microwaves, and on tables and chairs in outdoor areas.

5. Aluminum – Still focusing on a more modern environment, aluminum, unlike iron, is resistant to the action of the sea air and can be used in several stages of the work, in the structure, tiles, gutters, handles, doors and gates, profiles, windows, alloys and other accessories such as chairs.

“When it comes to works, it is necessary to carefully choose the materials that will be used. Aluminum, for example, is economical, recyclable and versatile. In the case of beach houses, it also has the benefit of being highly resistant to corrosion, which is precisely why it is even used on boats”, explains the specialist in aluminum and manager of the laminated division of the Mundo Serralheiro franchise, Trajan Neto.
