On Wednesday, the European Space Agency ESA presented a new group of prospective astronauts who are to fly into space by the end of the decade. The two women and three men will spend a year getting fit for space missions at the European Astronaut Center in Cologne. “We’ve already grown together as a team,” said Frenchwoman Sophie Adenot at the presentation of the group on Wednesday in Cologne.
The five had already started their training at the beginning of April. ESA selected her from more than 22,500 applicants. They each bring expertise in different areas, such as astronomy, physics, neurosciences or medicine. In addition to Adenot, the team includes Pablo Álvarez Fernández (Spain), Rosemary Coogan (Northern Ireland), Raphaël Liégeois (Belgium) and Marco Alain Sieber (Switzerland).
ESA astronauts fly to the ISS space station, for example, and the European space agency is also involved in the “Artemis” program, which aims to land people on the moon once more. After Franz Viehböck’s space flight as part of the “Austromir” mission in 1991, an Austrian woman also has a real chance of staying in space once more in the foreseeable future. The Carinthian physician Carmen Possnig was presented at the end of last year as part of the “ESA Astronaut Class 2022” and is a member of the eleven-man reserve corps that is ready for any missions.
