The atmosphere is suffocating because of the African dust that covers the whole country. In Thessaloniki, the mix of dust, humidity and fog grounded planes, while temperatures across the country have climbed to abnormally high levels for the season.
Experts advise the use of a mask, especially for people with respiratory problems and allergies.
In fact, according to the model of the Department of Environmental Physics and Meteorology of EKPA, the new wave seems to be approaching even Central Europe.
But the dust does not settle only on the hood of the vehicles. Due to its small diameter, it invades the lungs. “Due to the small size particles, the pollutants pass through the airways.., they now reach the alveoli. It is certain for those who have breathing problems from allergies to lung diseases… it creates various problems” points out the President of the Hellenic Society of Allergology & Clinical Immunology, Zoe Demestikha.
Those with respiratory problems should limit their activity, wear a mask and contact their doctor for reinforcement of medication.
African dust episodes are by definition combined with warm southerly winds that raise the temperature asymmetrically. Thus, April this year entered with unusually high temperatures. And this tends to become the norm.
“More and more such phenomena but no one excludes that we will also have periods when we will have the exact opposite.. What we are experiencing now is due to an increase of +1.3°C imagine how things will be when we reach +2°C or at +2.5°C which is expected” notes the Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Patras, Andreas Kazantzidis.
The dust from the Sahara, in addition to the minerals it contains, during its journey north is also enriched with other pollutants, perhaps even pathogens.
“Also passing through North African cities, the truth is that they are carrying and adsorbing particles and pollutants from those areas as well. And at the same time there is a related concern … regarding the transfer of pathogenic organisms that are not really endemic to our environment, this is an issue to look at” says the professor of Environmental Engineering of AUTH and president of the National Research Foundation, Dimosthenis Sarigiannis.
The dust will leave Greece by Wednesday, but will persist longer in Central Europe.
