The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, today inaugurated a water supply system in the province of Gaza, and criticized the idea that there are certain inaugurations that, due to their size, cannot deserve the attention of the Head of State. The open system has the capacity to supply 15,000 families.
The inauguration of the water supply system in Gaza province took place in a region where rain rarely falls and where water is literally scarce. In the northern region of Gaza, most of the population drinks water from rivers and dams, but, in a rare episode, it was possible to drill a water hole in the Administrative Post of Zinhane, Chigubo district.
The hole gave way to a water supply system that benefits thousands of people and which was inaugurated by the President of the Republic. On site, Filipe Nyusi began by explaining why a project of this size is inaugurated by the President of the Republic, following all, development is not restricted to the urban area. Therefore, Nyusi said that the development of rural areas cannot be analyzed from an urban perspective.
Nationally, the drinking water supply coverage rate is 44%, an increase of 5% compared to 2015. Zinhane already has water and recently had power.
Still in Gaza province, the Minister of Public Works says that coordination between countries in the region on water management has improved. Carlos Mesquita exemplified that, in the last rainy season, Mozambique was warned in advance regarding water discharges.
In Gaza province, Carlos Mesquita went to see the Macarretane dam up close, in the district of Chókwè, one of the infrastructures used for water management in the province, with emphasis on the peak heights of the rainy season.
As a result of the pressure of recent months, the dam’s gates no longer function automatically. Even so, Carlos Mesquita understands that there have been great improvements in the prior notice time in which countries that share rivers with Mozambique inform the country regarding discharges.
To improve management capacity and, above all, water conservation, the minister announced that the country needs to build, at national level, 36 dams in the coming years.
