Honor has introduced the second generation of its silicon-carbon batteries for smartphones. According to Honor, the batteries equipped with silicon-carbon anodes are supposed to be installed in the Magic 6 series; Honor did not announce whether the technology will be available in all models. The Magic 6 devices are already there available in China and are likely to come to Europe in the foreseeable future.

The new battery for the Magic 6 series has its own control chip, the Honor E1. This is intended to control the performance of the battery based on various environmental variables and, for example, ensure that the battery remains safe and powerful even at very low temperatures. The chip is also intended to improve charging and discharging efficiency and precisely record the capacity of the battery.

The second version of the silicon-carbon battery is said to function reliably at temperatures of up to -20 degrees Celsius. Honor did not provide any information about the power density of the new battery. The first version, which the company presented at MWC 2023, should have a 12.8 percent higher power density than comparable lithium-ion batteries.

Silicon-carbon batteries are said to have more stable residual power

When presenting the first version, Honor CEO George Zhao explained that the drop in residual voltage should be less severe in the silicon-carbon battery. Accordingly, a smartphone with such a battery should last longer when the charge level is low. With the new version, Honor also emphasizes that the performance should last over a longer period of time.
