Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Protocol Affairs in Saudi Arabia, Abdul Majeed Al-Semari, received a copy of the credentials of the new US ambassador to the country, Michael Ratney, Thursday.

And the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote, through its account on the Twitter platform: “On behalf of His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Undersecretary for Protocol Affairs, Abdul Majeed Al-Semari, receives a copy of the credentials of the US Ambassador-designate to the Kingdom, Mr. Michael Ratney.”

According to the US State Department, Michael Ratney is dean of the School of Language Studies at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute and has been a longtime foreign service officer since 1990.

Ratney held the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Levant, Israel and the Palestinians, and from 2015 to 2017 he held the position of the United States Special Envoy to Syria, and other positions in the US State Department.

A number of tweeters asked why the undersecretary received the credentials of the US ambassador, as the foreign minister himself usually receives them.

The former Saudi Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Al-Assaf, received a copy of the credentials of the former US ambassador, John Abizaid, on May 8, 2019. The late Saudi Foreign Minister, Saud Al-Faisal, also received the credentials of the former US ambassador, Joseph Westphal, in 2014.
