A new truce between the two warring parties in Sudan entered into force on Thursday, mediated by the President of South Sudan.

The Sudanese army had confirmed on Wednesday night that it had agreed to extend the truce proposed by the African organization “IGAD”, but stressed that all its pledges were conditional on the other party’s commitment to the truce.

The Sudanese army also pledged to appoint an “envoy to negotiate a truce” with the Rapid Support Forces under the auspices of the presidents of South Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti.

The Rapid Support Forces accused the Sudanese army of violating the declared humanitarian truce to evacuate diplomatic missions and enable citizens to meet their needs and reach safe areas.

The official spokesman for the Rapid Support Forces said in a statement: “The Sudanese forces continued to violate the declared humanitarian truce to evacuate diplomatic missions and enable citizens to fulfill their needs and reach safe areas.”

The statement added, “An attack by the Central Reserve forces was confronted, which caused them heavy losses in lives and equipment,” noting that “a number of vehicles, weapons, and a tracked tank were seized,” and the “Rapid Support Forces” repelled other attempts by the Sudanese forces in the Republican Palace area.

Guterres

In turn, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “The organization has failed to stop the war in Sudan.”

Guterres told reporters, “The United Nations was surprised by the outbreak of violence in Sudan because it was hoped that the negotiations between Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo would bear fruit,” adding, “We did not expect this to happen, and it can be said that we failed to prevent this from happening.”

Guterres noted that “a country like Sudan, which has suffered so much, cannot tolerate a power struggle between two people.”

Guterres’ remarks coincided with the visit of the UN Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, to Sudan, the day following South Sudan announced that the two parties to the conflict had agreed “in principle”, during a call with President Salva Kiir, to a truce that begins today, Thursday.

Griffiths called for security guarantees “at the highest level” to secure the delivery of aid following 6 trucks carrying food aid on their way to Darfur, west of the country, were looted.

Organization of Islamic Cooperation

On the other hand, the “Organization of Islamic Cooperation” held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, which concluded with a request to “brothers in Sudan to prevail over the language of dialogue, show restraint and wisdom, and return as soon as possible to the negotiating table to continue peaceful efforts to resolve the Sudanese crisis, in a way that preserves the unity of Sudan and state institutions and achieves The aspirations of the Sudanese people for political and economic stability.

The organization stressed “the need to take into account that the conflict in Sudan is a purely internal matter,” warning once morest “any external interference in Sudan, whatever its nature or source, with the necessity of preserving the cohesion of state institutions in Sudan.”
