A new daily temperature record was broken on Sunday followingnoon in Uccle, with 31.9 degrees recorded, meteorologist David Dehenauw announced on the social network Twitter. The previous record observed since the temperature reading for August 14 dates back to 1911 and stood at 31 degrees.
Belgium has been officially in a heat wave since Saturday. On that day, the temperature in the country once more exceeded 25 degrees Celsius, for the fifth day in a row. For the record, a heat wave in Belgium is defined by temperatures above 25°C for at least five days, with mercury exceeding 30° for at least three days.
This Sunday, David Dehenauw was questioned during the RTL INFO 13H on the weather forecast. From this night, local showers will affect the south of the country, before spreading further. However, the heat wave we are experiencing is expected to last a few more days. “It continues until the moment when we go below 25 degrees in Uccle in maximum temperature. It’s expected in the second half of the week at the latest, and at that time the heat wave will be over.“, says David Dehenauw.
Unlikely to have a new heat wave
According to forecasts, there should be no more heat waves for the rest of the summer. “Now we see on the maps temperatures between 23 and 25 degrees. So not above 30 degrees. But obviously these are ten or fifteen day forecasts, so we will always be cautious. But right now I don’t see it. And since we are still not very far, at this time, from the end of the month. In September we can still have 30 degrees, but we have never experienced, so far, a heat wave in September“, concludes David Dehenauw.
