Press conference calling for gender equality in employment
“I shouldn’t be left out because I’m a woman”
Demand disclosure of selection criteria, number of applicants, gender ratio, etc.
The labor world urged that gender equality be achieved in the open recruitment of production (technical) positions at Hyundai Motor Company, which has been held for the first time in 10 years. Hyundai Motor Company has never hired a woman for a technical job.
On the 29th, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Korea Metal Workers’ Union, the Hyundai Motors branch, and the Joint Action to Eliminate Gender Discrimination in Employment held a press conference at the Metal Workers’ Union in Jung-gu, Seoul, and said, “Even now, young women are searching for jobs with anxiety that they will not be hired because they are women.” He said, “Hyundai Motors should proceed with fair and non-sexist recruitment in hiring for technical positions in 2023.”
Since its foundation, Hyundai Motor Company has never hired a single female employee in its technical job openings. Currently, only regarding 500 (2%) of Hyundai Motor Company’s 28,000 technical staff are women. Even so, most of them are employees who worked as part of an in-house subcontractor, but became regular workers following the court ruled on illegal dispatch.

Kim Eun-joo, head of the Women’s Culture Office of the Hyundai Motor Workers’ Union, said, “Women workers do not work separately or are assigned to special processes, but work equally with men in the elements of the production plant.” Conditions can be given, but there must never be anything alienated because you are a woman.”
Park Hee-eun, vice chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, said, “It is a big misunderstanding to think that there were no women at Hyundai Motor Company or that there was nothing women might do in the automobile manufacturing process.” It was because the jobs that women had at the time were outsourced.”
They argued that gender discrimination in recruitment should be eliminated not only at Hyundai Motor Company but also in society in general. They said, “The wage gap by gender in Korea as of 2022 is 31.5%, ranking first among OECD member countries since 1996.” Companies are condoning gender discrimination that occurs from hiring to retirement in accordance with the government’s meager regulations,” he said.
Vice Chairman Park said, “When jobs improve, men apply, and as more men are hired, they become men’s jobs.”
They demanded that Hyundai Motor Company disclose the selection criteria for each stage of recruitment and the gender ratio of the number of applicants.
They also said to the citizens, “I hope you will constantly monitor the government and companies’ connivance to the structure of gender discrimination, and actively inform people around you of gender-discriminatory interviews, recruitment, and working environments.” You can report it to the Kakao Talk open chat room (pf.kakao.com/_adxbcb) for joint action on the elimination of discrimination, and you can report information related to Hyundai Motor to the Hyundai Motor branch.”
Hyundai Motor Company will conduct public recruitment of 700 new technical employees twice this year and next year. The announcement of the final successful candidates for this year’s open recruitment will be made in July.
