New system for entry and exit from the European Union

European Union (EU) authorities have announced that a new entry and exit system for countries belonging to the European Union will come into effect this year. Are you travelling to Europe this year? Details of the new developments are below.

The European Commission announced that the new entry/exit system (EES) for travellers from non-EU countries will be operational from 10 November 2024.

This system, which will be complemented by the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), will be mandatory for all visitors from 30 European countries from spring 2025.

A Commission spokesperson confirmed that although the EES was approved in 2022, its implementation has experienced several delays, with the latest deadline being October 2024.

The EES It will apply both to travellers who require a short-stay visa and to those who are exempt from this obligation.

Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson stressed that the system would allow for stricter controls on who enters the Schengen area with a foreign passport and whether the permitted stay is respected.

Johansson stressed that this will help combat illegal immigration and make it more difficult for criminals and other malicious actors to use fake passports.

The European Commission also said it is in close contact with Member States to ensure they are prepared for the implementation of the new system from next November.

How will this new EU system for controlling entry and exit from its territory work? You will need to provide your personal data. Passport control officers will scan your fingerprints or take a photograph of your face when you arrive at an entry point. This information will be recorded in a digital file.
