A Japanese study shows that drinking two or more cups of coffee a day can double the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in people with severe hypertension.

Published on December 21 in the specialist journal Journal of the American Heart Associationthe study shows that consuming two or more cups of coffee a day can double the risk of death par heart disease in people with severe high blood pressure.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers followed for 19 years more than 6,570 men and more than 12,000 women, aged 40 to 79 at the start of the research, from the cohort of the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for Evaluation of Cancer Risk. During the research, 842 deaths related to cardiovascular diseases were recorded.

“These results may support the claim that people with severe high blood pressure should avoid drinking too much coffee“said the study’s lead author, Hiroyasu Iso, quoted in a statement from the American Heart Association. “Because people with severe hypertension are more susceptible to the effects of caffeine. Harmful effects caffeine may outweigh its protective effects and may increase the risk of death.”
