BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) — In a delightful continuation of a tradition that has already birthed tiger, rabbit, and Chinese dragon renditions, a captivating snake-themed incarnation of Bing Dwen Dwen was officially introduced to the public in Beijing on Tuesday, capturing the festive spirit of the upcoming Year of the Snake.
As an integral part of the enduring legacy of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the release of Bing Dwen Dwen in various designs inspired by the Chinese zodiac serves as a tribute to the rich cultural heritage celebrated during the New Year festivities.
International Olympic Committee member Yu Zaiqing expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The dual Olympic city of Beijing stands out as one of the few host cities capable of perpetuating the Olympic culture and spirit, offering a vibrant legacy through initiatives such as these. The endearing Bing Dwen Dwen, adored globally, is poised to attract attention once again with its charming snake version.”
The design for Bing Dwen Dwen’s snake version draws its essence from the treasured Chinese folk love story “The Legend of the White Snake,” featuring intricate and exquisite decorations that carry heartfelt wishes for joy and prosperity, as highlighted by the creative team behind the mascot.
Lin Cunzhen, a distinguished professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, remarked, “The series of Bing Dwen Dwen inspired by the Chinese zodiac has evolved into a much-anticipated gift for the New Year, ensuring it continues to shine as a legacy from the Olympics while stimulating economic activity through increased consumption.”
Licensed products showcasing the snake version—including toys, badges, and keychains—will debut in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, and Guangzhou this coming Friday, coinciding with celebrations marking the third anniversary of the Beijing Winter Olympics set for February 2025.
