The US authorities announced that they had arrested a young man suspected of shooting in Highland Park, near Chicago, a crowd of people who were attending a parade on the occasion of Independence Day, in an attack that left 6 dead and at least 26 wounded.
A security source said the suspect, Robert E. Karimo III, nicknamed “Bobby” (22 years), was stopped without clashes, following police spotted him driving a car on a highway outside Chicago, ending a tracking operation in which hundreds of policemen participated.
The police had published a picture of the suspect, in which he appeared to be a young man with a slender face and tattoos covering his neck, and identified him as “from the area.”
This new tragedy occurred in a country that has not yet recovered from successive shocks caused by a series of armed attacks that left many dead.
Police said that the suspect, armed with a rifle, climbed onto the roof of a store, where he started shooting at people who had gathered to watch the annual parade on the occasion of the National Day, which the United States celebrates on the fourth of July every year.
According to Highland Park Police, a luxury town on the shores of Lake Michigan, with a population of 30,000, the gunman got out and got into a silver Honda Fit, and fled.
Hundreds of policemen participated in the search for the shooter, whose photo was attached to a warning, in which the police told residents, “You must exercise the utmost caution. This man is on the run. He is considered armed and dangerous.”
After the wanted man was arrested, Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jugman said his arrest went “without problems”, at the conclusion of a brief highway manhunt.
Bobby has a number of pages on social networking sites, in which he introduces himself as a musician from Chicago called “Awake the Rapper”.
Before his arrest, the police deployed reinforcements, including armored vehicles and federal units.
