The Vienna Philharmonic have several reasons to celebrate in 2024. For the Bruckner year – the composer was born 200 years ago – one is prepared with a recently published complete recording of the symphonies under Christian Thielemann, for the birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th symphony, which – also – saw the light of day in 1824, an anniversary concert with Riccardo Muti is scheduled. The new season presented the orchestral leadership in Salzburg.
“The Vienna Philharmonic saved me during the Corona period,” reported Thielemann of the recordings of the Bruckner symphonies, some of which were made during the lockdown. Vienna was deserted, he himself “the only guest in the Sacher”, only to find a well-tested, rested and highly motivated orchestra in the Musikverein. 11 symphonies were recorded together, although originally only the known nine pieces were intended. “The two early symphonies that were added were new discoveries for us too,” says Michael Bladerer, Managing Director of the Philharmoniker.
At the premiere of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th symphony, the Vienna Philharmonic had not yet been founded – but they are still felt to be part of their own history and DNA, as CEO Daniel Froschauer emphasized. “One can conclude from the documents that the idea of founding the Philharmonic also arose from this premiere.” In addition, two of the musicians who performed the premiere were later active as founding members of the Philharmonic. The 200th birthday will be celebrated with a whole series of concerts from May 4th conducted by Riccardo Muti. “He has been working with us continuously for 52 years and has seen many generations of Philharmonikers.” This close connection is to be appreciated.
At the same time, the top orchestra, which works without a chief conductor, is constantly on the lookout for the younger generation at the podium. You have a lot of conversations, with some long before they come into the Philharmoniker’s subscription program for the first time. Lorenzo Viotti, for example, will conduct for the first time in this series in June 2024. Daniel Harding, Jakub Hrůša and Tugan Sokhiev are also among the Abodirigent, as well as long-standing accompanists such as Franz Welser-Möst, Zubin Mehta and Herbert Blomstedt. The New Year’s Concert 2024 will be conducted by Christian Thielemann.
