Britain imposes new sanctions on Iranians, including leaders of the Revolutionary Guards

Today, Monday, Britain announced, in coordination with the United States and the European Union, the imposition of more sanctions on Iranian officials, including members of the Revolutionary Guards, which it said were responsible for human rights violations.

The British government indicated that the sanctions included four leaders of the Revolutionary Guards.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement: “The UK and international partners confirm once once more today that we will not turn a blind eye to brutal repression. We will continue to take a range of measures to hold the regime accountable for its actions.”

And US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, last Friday, following Washington imposed sanctions on companies accused of supporting Iran’s military program and its drone program: “We are strongly committed to obstructing Iran’s military procurement activities.”

“We are working to identify entities from Iran and the People’s Republic of China that are involved in such destabilizing behavior,” Blinken added.

In early April, sources familiar with the implications of Iranian-Russian relations revealed to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the two countries have intensified their efforts and joint moves in recent months to discuss mechanisms to circumvent the US sanctions imposed on them.

The sources said that the visit of the Secretary of the Iranian National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, to Russia on February 9 marked a “new stage” in joint action once morest US and Western sanctions.
