New residents have moved into the Franklin Park Zoo’s Outback Trail. They are two western gray kangaroos: Auggie and Opal, male and female, respectively, and both one year old.

The two new kangaroos join the other residents of the Outback Trailwhich include emus, red kangaroos and red-necked kangaroos, a species that made its exhibit debut in April, the Franklin Park Zoo reported in a written communication.

“We are very excited about the recent additions to our Outback Trail and delighted that visitors have the opportunity to observe the natural behaviors of these species while exploring their habitat,” said Ed O’Brien, Franklin Park Zoo assistant curator, of the Zoo. New England. “Both the red-necked wallaby and the western gray kangaroo are cold-hardy species, so visitors will have the opportunity to see them for much of the year.”

Franklin Park Zoo has been home to red kangaroos since 1998, but this is the first time gray kangaroos will reside at the zoo, it was said.

“It’s always exciting when our zoos welcome new resident animals,” said John Linehan, Zoo New England President and CEO. “It’s especially exciting when it’s one we haven’t had before, like gray kangaroos, allowing us to further connect guests with the incredible biodiversity found on our planet.”

Western gray kangaroos are native to Australia, a wealth of biodiversity and home to several regional species that are threatened with extinction, the zoo said. Western gray kangaroos live in small troops and congregate at preferred feeding and drinking spots. These groups are usually made up of females and their young, and the males are solitary, it was added.
