New report reveals enterprises are accelerating edge adoption to outpace the competition with nearly 70% leveraging edge to solve critical business challenges

A NTT Ltd., the world’s leading IT services and infrastructure company, today released its Edge Advantage report, which found that while two-thirds of companies investing in the edge are solving real-world business challenges and more than 8 in 10 organizations expect their reliance on As third-party edge services grow over the next two years, nearly 40% of those planning to deploy edge are concerned that current infrastructure capacity will fail to support the promise of the technology.

Companies around the world are discovering the advantage of the edge, benefiting from digital technologies that accelerate data-driven decision making, secure virtual and physical assets, and govern sustainably resilient operations. But while more than 80% of technology decision makers said their expectations for investments at the edge were met or exceeded, there is much fear that the rapid pace of technology evolution might cost them in the long run.

infrastructure capacity

Today’s adopters see the fragmented management of compute, connectivity and IoT devices as an obstacle to realizing the potential of the edge. As such, those organizations that are combining private 5G and edge technologies have reported the greatest benefits compared to companies that have adopted a segregated legacy approach or no approach at all.

The report also revealed that while most organizations believe their network infrastructure can handle today’s edge requirements, nearly 40% of companies planning to deploy such technology recognize a need to upgrade their network in order to support the edge. Expected increase in connected devices and apps. In fact, nearly two-thirds of companies that have deployed the edge have coordinated a wide area network upgrade.

In light of this, many organizations are planning to turn to their partners to help them on their associated journey to the edge. So much so that 88% believe their organization’s reliance on third-party edge services will grow over the next 24 months, with 90% expressing a preference for consuming edge services from a single partner that provides a central point of accountability and has more managed service options ranked as the number one factor in making edge consumption easier.

“The growing need for faster processing and distributed digital architecture is putting greater pressure on networks and infrastructure capacity, driving accelerated adoption of 5G private and edge,” said Shahid Ahmed, Executive Vice President New Ventures and Innovation at NTT Ltd. “Achieving edge advantage will require end-to-end solutions with holistic management and tight accountability. Only through the use of these solutions can companies gain instant access to data, wherever it is generated or collected, with nearly zero latency, and leverage it to drive powerful business outcomes.”

Industry perspective

The motivation behind adopting edge can vary from industry to industry. Among manufacturing firms, operational efficiency is the top driver for investing in the edge, with data security the second driver. These firms are striving to be just-in-time organizations that meet and even anticipate market needs, turning data into a competitive advantage. Here’s a breakdown of the top reasons to employ edge solutions:

  • Increase employee safety, experience, and efficiency (79%)

  • Simplify/digitize business processes (76%)

  • Improve customer experience/anticipate customer needs (74%)

  • Increase use of data insights for decision making (72%)

When it comes to improving supply chain efficiency and resiliency, 100% of healthcare, transportation and manufacturing organizations have met or exceeded their expectations for the edge. The same can be said for increasing employee safety, experience and efficiency in the energy sector.

Applications optimized by edge computing benefit from low latency, predictability and high bandwidth for real-time data collection to be performed according to the specific needs of the industry. With the clarity around the benefits of the edge, it’s no surprise that more than nine in ten (93%) of respondents consider it a competitive advantage within the industry.

complex environments

According to organizations that have already deployed the edge, the top reasons to invest are to automate and integrate AI into business processes and gain access to real-time data. But achieving these goals is a tremendous challenge because it requires:

  • A tight orchestration of hardware, platforms, systems and devices

  • Consistent operational performance without compromising security

  • Overcoming legacy infrastructure and technical debt

Organizations need help navigating the complexity of adopting edge and next-generation technologies in what has traditionally been a complex and change-resistant environment. Legacy protocols and systems need to be carefully managed to ensure that production is not impacted while migrations are in progress.

The challenges an organization may encounter are key drivers as to why 94% of companies partner for edge expertise and 90% want a single partner that can do it all. But those already successfully leveraging the benefits of the edge can look to grow their businesses, improve agility, improve sustainable business practices and improve quality control.

“Organizations striving to become real-time enterprises need help beyond building and launching edge solutions,” said Camille Mendler, chief analyst at Omdia. “Managed services offer a pragmatic and adaptive way to stay ahead of complexity.”

Journey to edge services

Late last year, NTT announced the launch of its Edge as a Service offering to help secure, optimize and simplify organizations’ digital transformation journeys. Leveraging NTT’s network infrastructure power and global footprint, the managed edge computing platform gives enterprises the ability to rapidly deploy and securely manage and monitor near-edge applications.

At the end of the report, NTT composed a guide with suggested starting points and paths for organizations to consider before embarking on their edge computing journey. To read the full “2023 Edge Advantage Report”, click here.
