The Minister of Tourism assures that Revenu Québec will not hesitate to impose fines of $ 100,000 from September 1 on Airbnb – or even on the owners, who are also liable under the new law – for each ad that does not contain registration number and expiry date associated with a certificate.
“The platforms tell us that they will not be ready for September 1,” said Caroline Proulx in an interview with Noovo Info on Friday. “They say that they will be forced to withdraw a good number of advertisements, which will cause a destructuring of the offer…”
“What that means is that we won’t be able to rent Airbnb,” she said.
Fines or not, a possible withdrawal of ads from platforms like Airbnb in Quebec has the potential to make some users grumble; but once once more, Ms. Proulx has no fears.
“Me, what I say to Airbnb is that we have excellent hoteliers in Quebec… They will be ready to welcome international customers.”

Ms. Proulx believes that her department has done enough to prepare Airbnb and company for the change next September, following seven meetings with the operators of 19 transactional platforms.
“Now, if Expedia and Airbnb present resistance, it is their prerogative. Revenu Québec investigators will be on the ground,” she warned.
