On September 23, 2024, the Official Gazette of Cuba published Resolution 51/2024, which establishes a new price for standardized bread, one of the essential products in the family basket.
According to the normativethe price of 60 grams of bread, which will now be distributed in the rationing system, will be 0.75 Cuban pesos (CUP).
This measure is a response to the temporary reduction in the weight of bread, which went from 80 to 60 grams due to the shortage of raw materials in the country.
The resolution, signed on September 13, 2024, is based on agreements previously established by the Council of Ministers. Agreement 8957, of November 2020, had set the price of 80-gram standard bread at 1 CUP, while Agreement 9028, of March 2021, granted powers to adjust retail prices of products intended for the family basket in extraordinary situations, such as the current one.

Recently, Anayra Cabrera Martínez, general director of industrial policy of the Ministry of the Food Industry (MINAL), explained in a report broadcast on state television that the reducation in weight It aims to ensure the equitable distribution of bread throughout the country, despite the shortage of supplies.
The official stressed that although the loaf will now be smaller, the quality of the product should not be affected. “All raw materials involved in production, such as flour, oil, sugar and yeast, are guaranteed. Resolution 51/2024 came into force after its publication on September 13 and will remain in force as long as the shortage of supplies that has led to the temporary reduction in the weight of bread in Cuba continues.
