After the left-wing faction was dissolved, ten MPs led by politician Sahra Wagenknecht formed a new group in the German Bundestag today. Wagenknecht said she was elected chairwoman and her colleague Klaus Ernst was elected deputy.
At the same time, the new group submitted an application for recognition to Bundestag President Bärbel Bas. They hope for a decision in January, said Wagenknecht.
If the plenum of the Bundestag approves, the MPs as a new group will receive certain rights and financial support. The details are first discussed in the council of elders and then recorded in a resolution.
The remaining 28 MPs from the Left had already applied for status as a separate group. The Bundestag has not yet provided any information as to when the two motions might be voted on.
Party as a competitive project
Wagenknecht and nine other MPs left the Left party in October. They want to found their own party in January as a competing project – the actual founding is expected to take place on January 8th, said Wagenknecht. The founding party conference is announced for January 27th.
Without the former members, the left-wing faction missed the minimum size of 37 MPs and therefore dissolved last week. For the time being, all 38 former members are listed as “non-attached” in the Bundestag and have only limited rights as individual members.
