third planet
A new exoplanet has been discovered within the closest planetary system to ours: Proxima Centauri. Potentially the third planet discovered to date, Proxima d has regarding 25% of Earth’s mass. It orbits very close to its star, even closer than Mercury orbits the Sun.
Mission impossible
Scientists have collected evidence of the existence of this exoplanet using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile. Given the very small size of the object, this discovery is quite a feat. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star located regarding four light years from Earth. Assuming that astronauts might travel at the speed of light, the Earth – Proxima d journey would take four years.
