New Penalties for QMJHL Players Who Fight in a Game: Commissioner Optimistic for Safer Environment

The assembly of QMJHL members agreed to new penalties for players who fight in a game:

  • added extreme game misconduct for any player involved in a fight;
  • addition of a one-game suspension for any player found to be an instigator;
  • addition of a minimum two-game suspension for any player declared an aggressor;
  • Addition of a one-game suspension for any player involved in a 2nd fight during the same season.

Noting that the vote held with the team owners had provided a unanimous result, the commissioner was thus optimistic as to what, in his opinion, should create a safer environment for the players.

Cecchini also believes that the package of additional measures effectively meets the expectations of the Minister for Sport, Isabelle Charest.

The minister reacted with this publication on her Twitter account: I salute the leadership and the work done by the @LHJMQ to put an end to fights. I will continue to work with my counterparts in the other provinces to continue in this direction.

Mario Cecchini admits, however, that this will not completely eliminate all fights.

« For all our regulations, each year, there are adjustments to be made, but the steps we take are very important; they are huge. There were good and long conversations, mostly positive. We are in a very good place for quite a while. »

A quote from Mario Cecchini, commissioner of the LHJMQ

Asked regarding the isolation created by the new rules compared to what is in effect in the two other Canadian junior circuits (OHL and WHL), the commissioner acknowledged that talks will have to take place to clarify this issue, in particular to presentation of the Memorial Cup tournament.

In the meantime, preparatory meetings which were to pit teams from the QMJHL once morest Ontario teams have been canceled with the hope that everything can be back to normal before the 2024-2025 season.

Also, it is to supervise and facilitate the work of the officials that electronic tablets will be added to the penalty box. Additional cameras will be positioned above the blue lines for offside calls.

During the press briefing, there was also talk of bringing some of the amphitheatres on the circuit up to standard (bands and lighting). Cecchini hinted that these standards are still being negotiated with the Quebec government, which has already written this into the pages of its most recent budget.

The commissioner was in Sherbrooke for the QMJHL Draft, which was held face-to-face for the first time since 2019.
