New order to evacuate areas in Gaza

Warning leaflets and e-mails were sent to the area north of Khan Younis city and the eastern Deir Al-Balah area, where tens of thousands of people have sought refuge from the war elsewhere in Gaza.

The Israeli army explains in a statement that the warning is aimed at limiting civilian casualties and giving civilians the opportunity to move away from the hostilities zone.

Earlier, the military announced it had struck a zone in Khan Yunis from which rockets had been fired at the village of Kisufim on Thursday and where weapons, including portable rockets, and explosives were found.

Most of the Gaza Strip’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes and moved repeatedly within the Palestinian enclave in search of safe areas. But even in areas designated as safe zones there are systematic casualties among the civilian population.

Israel accuses Hamas and other organizations of deliberately placing their fighters in such “safe” areas. Hamas denies this. In any case, hostilities are now more scattered and less organized, since Hamas has switched to guerilla warfare tactics.
