Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and Netflix is already expanding its own RomCom portfolio with “Your Place Or Mine”. Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon have to face up to what they really want from each other here.
With “Your Place Or Mine” Netflix has a romantic comedy at the start that should appeal primarily to viewers who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s. Because with Reese Witherspoon (“Big Little Lies”) and Ashton Kutcher (“Freundschaft Plus”) there are two stars in front of the camera who were part of the youth of many people at that time. While Witherspoon has “Cruel Intentions”, “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Legally Blonde” to his credit, Kutcher was, for example, thanks to “Punk’d”, “That 70’s Show”, “Dude – Where’s My Car?” or ” Butterfly Effect” very present.
While the reunion of Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher in Your Place Or Mine, available to stream on Netflix today, also comes with some nostalgic feelings, we still have to warn you:
The movie is not good at all! The official FILMSTARTS review gave it a weak 1.5 out of a possible 5 stars. The conclusion is correspondingly harsh and underlines that the two main actors do not harmonize with each other at all: “Almost nothing regarding this film feels real, least of all the feelings between Debbie and Peter.”

Though they ended up in bed together years ago, Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter’s (Ashton Kutcher) relationship is now platonic. Nevertheless, the two still like to exchange views on the phone regarding their night together. Part of the reason they’re not a couple is that the two are completely different: Debbie is a single mother raising her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel) in Los Angeles. Peter, on the other hand, is a New York marketing executive whose life seems to be in constant flux.
But to give Debbie some time off to focus on herself, the two decide to swap homes for a week. Peter takes care of Jack, Debbie is having a good time in New York. When Debbie meets an attractive man (Jesse Williams) in NYC, not only she but also Peter realizes that their friendship might actually always have been the basis for more…
Promising names that weren’t made of
In addition to Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, who act as prominent draft horses here, there are also a few other interesting names: Zoe Chao (“The Afterparty”), Steve Zahn (“The White Lotus”), Tig Notaro (“Ary Of The Dead”), Griffin Matthews (“She-Hulk”), Rachel Bloom (“The School For Good And Evil”), Shiri Appleby (“UnREAL”), Vella Lovell (“Crazy EX-Girlfriend”) and the aforementioned Jesse Williams (“Grey’s Antomy”).
A well-known cast that one might have looked forward to if “Your Place Or Mine” didn’t give away its ensemble as you can also see from the criticism.
This also applies to Aline Brosh McKenna, who is making her debut here in the director’s chair and is a real RomCom specialist. In the past, McKenna was mainly active as a screenwriter and wrote, for example, the template for “The Devil Wears Prada” with Meryl Streep or “27 Dresses” with Katherine Heigl.
She also wrote the screenplay for Your Place Or Mine. In this case – at least judging by the quality of the film – it didn’t land a hit. However, it should be relatively certain that the RomCom will nestle in the Netflix charts for a few weeks.
