The Ministry of Health announced a change in biosafety measures in health centers. From now on, the use of face masks will no longer be mandatory in these facilities, according to the entity’s new regulations.
This new rule, as established in Resolution 2121 of December 18, 2023, repeals the previous Resolution 555 of the same year, which limited the use of face masks to clinics, hospitals and nursing homes.
This change, which was known this January 10, establishes that this biosafety measure will no longer be mandatory in these establishments in health centers, however, MinSalud continues to emphasize self-care.
The new guideline emphasizes that, although the mandatory use of face masks is withdrawn, it is the responsibility of each citizen to use it as a personal care measure.
“It is up to each inhabitant of the national territory to use the mask as a measure of care for themselves, their loved ones and society in general in the presence of symptoms of acute respiratory infection,” the document states.

Colombia registered more than 6 million confirmed cases of covid-19 from the beginning of the pandemic until November 11, 2023, of which 0.02% remain active.
“Likewise, you should take extreme care measures and avoid contact with other people if risk situations are identified or any of the family members present comorbidities associated with a greater risk of serious illness from covid-19 and other respiratory infections,” detailed the Resolution.
It should be noted that the current contagion rate is 0.16 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, according to the health entity.
However, it should be noted that each institution is responsible for adapting its biosafety protocols according to the local situation and the needs of its patients.
