New Metro K Line Launches Near LAX: Service Changes for South Bay Passengers

A new Metro rail station is set to open near Los Angeles International Airport this Sunday, signifying an important transformation in the service for passengers relying on the Metro C (Green) Line traveling in this area and the South Bay region.

The four stations in the South Bay region — Mariposa, El Segundo, Douglas, and Redondo Beach — will now officially become part of the newly designated Metro K Line. Passengers traveling westbound on the C Line who wish to continue to these South Bay stations will need to disembark at the newly inaugurated Aviation/Century Station, where they will then cross the platform to catch a southbound K Line train.

For South Bay passengers aiming to travel east toward Norwalk, they will board a northbound K Line train and exit at the Aviation/Century Station. They must then walk across the platform and board an eastbound C Line train to continue their journey.

The K Line will maintain a temporary rail gap between the Aviation/Century Station and the existing Westchester/Veterans Station, which is a result of ongoing construction for the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station situated between these two points and close to the airport. Until the completion of this station, K Line passengers will depend on shuttle buses to navigate through this stretch. These shuttle buses will be available every 10 minutes during daytime hours and every 20 minutes in the evenings.

The northern stretch of the K Line currently operates between the Westchester/Veterans Station and the E (Expo) Line at Crenshaw Boulevard.

Once the LAX/Metro Transit Center Station is operational, which is tentatively scheduled for later this month, the K Line will offer services from Redondo Beach to the E Line at Crenshaw. This new LAX station will also integrate with the forthcoming People Mover, enhancing access to the airport terminals for all passengers.

Metro Ambassadors and TAP staff members will be present on both the K and C Lines throughout this transition period, as well as at the newly opened Aviation/Century Station, to assist passengers in navigating their routes and reaching their destinations.
