The Japanese pharmaceutical company Shionogi presented a medicine that promises to reduce the loss of smell and taste caused by the infection of Covid-19. The medicine is called Xocova and can reduce the intensity or even prevent these symptoms.

In the phase 3 clinical study presented by Shionogi, the medicine reduced symptoms in volunteers following three days of use, and in seven days the loss of sensation was 39% less in those taking medication, showing an interesting effectiveness in the treatment of Covid-19.

In addition, Xocova can also alleviate other symptoms of the disease, such as the average duration of fever to less than 2 days and the complete cessation of symptoms before 7 days following administration of the drug, regardless of age and comorbidities.

“The partial results further support the tolerability and efficacy of ensitrelvir, regardless of risk factors, in real-world settings in Japan,” said Shionogi Senior Vice President of Drug Development Takeki Uehara.

The drug is currently being analyzed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the authority that regulates medicines in the United States and which is equivalent to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) in Brazil, and may be released soon.

If the drug is approved in the USA, the tendency is for the pharmaceutical company to request approval in other countries within a few months, including Brazil. After that, the medicine can be applied as part of the treatment for coronavirus infection.
