The first Maximarkt was opened in Linz’s Neue Heimat district 55 years ago. After a modernization in 2003, preparations for a renovation have now begun. The restaurant has already been closed, an escalator is being turned and stabilizing columns are being installed.
Despite the work, customers should be able to continue shopping without disruption, said Maximarkt managing director Thomas Schrenk at a press conference on Thursday. There will be a break between October and February 2025 to allow for a quiet Christmas business period.

Maximarkt has been a subsidiary of the Interspar company since 2002. A total of seven markets are operated in Salzburg and Upper Austria, for example in Ried, Wels, Haid and Vöcklabruck. The market in Linz will offer a sales area of 4,200 square meters. The first construction phase will begin in March 2025, and Maximarkt’s headquarters will also be renovated. Completion is scheduled for autumn 2026, with a total investment of 35 million euros.
The number of employees will increase by ten to 148. 40 employees will work in the new headquarters, which will move to the new upper floor. The restaurant will be renovated and a sun terrace will offer 150 seats. The renovation will make the location more compact and at the same time the sales area will grow, said Schrenk. Inside the market there will only be a tobacconist as a partner. There will be a “fresh market place” right at the entrance, where baked goods, delicatessen and fruit and vegetables will be available.
