“New materials will facilitate the decarbonization of construction”, observe Matthieu Lerondeau and Alizée Blanchin

While cement manufacturers must make a necessary ecological transition, other materials are emerging, either driven by regulations, such as the use of biosourced products under the impetus of RE2020 in France, or more recently from research. On the occasion of the recent publication of a report on innovative materials, Matthieu Lerondeau, director of communities at Leonard, the tkink tank and incubator of the Vinci group, and Alizée Blanchin, partner at Hello Tomorrow, a consulting company specializing in deeptech, answer questions from L’Usine Nouvelle.

L’Usine Nouvelle – What are the main issues linked to the decarbonization of construction?
Matthieu Lerondeau –
Thanks to a general movement of ecological transition in the sector, we have seen the emergence of alternative materials, wood derivatives… At the same time, our subsidiary Vinci Construction has worked a lot, with the Exegy brand, on the deployment low carbon and ultra low carbon concrete. Wood, thanks to the RE2020 regulations, is attracting increased interest.
Alizée Blanchin – Construction represents 30% of global energy consumption, and 40% of raw material consumption, in a context of an expected increase of 13% by 2050. In the short term, it is a question of seeking quickly deployable solutions. Concrete is affected. At lower levels of maturity, it is also a question of working differently, for example, with materials functioning by biomimicry. Concerning concrete, there is a need to involve all trades so that the new concretes can be used on construction sites. Research operations still need to be financed, as the costs of these new concretes are not yet competitive compared to traditional materials.

By routing less electricity to a building, we would also consume less

How can these new materials affect the life cycle of buildings?
