A Lyme disease vaccine may soon be available. Researchers and laboratories have high hopes of a market launch in 2025.
Another big step forward. According to information reported by the New York Post, a Lyme disease vaccine may soon be available. Earlier this month, Moderna announced two new candidates for mRNA vaccine development.
For their part, Pfizer and Valneva also have a candidate vaccine, VLA15, already in advanced clinical trials. But following being informed of possible violations of GCPs (code of Good Clinical Practices, Editor’s note), the two groups announced that they had excluded a significant sample of test participants from clinical trials. A setback that should have no impact on their goal. A marketing authorization request might thus be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2025.
In addition to the vaccine, researchers are currently studying other alternatives to protect once morest Lyme disease, such as therapeutic monoclonal antibodies, molecules produced in the laboratory to specifically treat a disease.

Ticks spread everywhere in France
As a reminder, Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, is transmitted during a tick bite infected by a bacterium of the spirochete family. Symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, or rash. If left untreated, facial paralysis, heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat, nerve pain, and inflammation of the brain and spinal cord can occur.
Currently, the most effective way to protect once morest Lyme disease is to use insect repellent and wear clothing that covers the skin in areas with high tick populations. Note that ticks are prevalent everywhere in France, especially below 1,500 meters above sea level. They live in wooded and humid areas, tall prairie grasses, gardens and forest or urban parks. Human contaminations are more frequent during the period of maximum tick activity, in France between the beginning of spring and the end of autumn.
