New Lord of the Rings film set to hit the big screen

‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ Returns to Middle-earth with an Anime Twist

Fans eager to return to the fantastical world of Middle-earth won’t have to wait much longer. “The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim,” a new animated film, takes viewers centuries before the events of the beloved trilogy, delving into the rich history of Rohan.

A Fresh Perspective on a Familiar Tale

This time, the epic tales of Middle-earth are told through the captivating medium of anime. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on acclaimed anime series such as “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex,” “War of the Rohirrim” promises a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.

“It’s also just like a return to home, in some way,” Australian actress Miranda Otto said. Otto reprises her role as the shieldmaiden Eowyn, marking a reunion with the character after two decades. “It’s really beautiful to rebuild on a character that you did 20 years ago, that you never thought that you would ever get to play again.”

A Legendary Team Reunited

The Oscar-winning trio behind the original “Lord of the Rings” films, Sir Peter Jackson, Dame Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens, return for this spinoff. Boyens, who also serves as screenwriter, faced the challenge of crafting a compelling story in a shorter timeframe.

“Normally, it takes about five years to make an anime film and of this scale, probably longer – they had three,” Boyens shared.

“But I tell you what, the Kiwis came through.”

Sir Peter Jackson, who steps back from a directing role but remains involved as executive producer, expressed his enthusiasm for exploring Middle-earth in a new light, excited about the opportunity to revisit the world through the lens of anime.

“We’ve done the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit trilogy… We don’t have to try to do something else like that again so just going into a different medium entirely, I thought, was a really interesting idea,” Jackson remarked.

Exploring Helm Hammerhand’s Legacy

The film focuses on a pivotal moment in the history of Rohan, highlighting the legendary King Helm Hammerhand. Acclaimed actor Brian Cox lends his voice to the stoic and powerful ruler of Rohan, whose unwavering determination to protect his people becomes a defining characteristic of the Rohirrim.

“What is wonderful about this is, I’ve been one that’s longing for the end of the patriarchy,” Cox stated.

“I think we’ve all suffered from the patriarchy for far too long and so when I saw the film, I thought it really hit something.”

“When you’re in the voice studio, you’re really just in the pure essence of the character and what they’re feeling,” mirrored Otto.

“It was a really emotional experience.”

“The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim” promises an immersive journey back to Middle-earth, offering a unique perspective on a beloved world. Its captivating animation, compelling story, and renowned cast ensure an unforgettable cinematic experience for fans of all generations.
