New London Man Arrested for DUI and Drug Charges After Reckless Driving in Construction Zone

NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) – In a troubling incident on Monday evening, a New London resident was apprehended on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and narcotics possession after he recklessly navigated through a construction zone on Interstate 95.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., a state trooper was on-site to ensure the safety of workers engaged in a highway project along I-95 northbound, specifically positioned between exit 92 and the Rhode Island state border.

The construction area was secured with a left lane closure that was clearly indicated by several signs, orange traffic barrels, and cones. Additionally, multiple Department of Transportation crash trucks, equipped with illuminated arrow boards, were actively directing traffic through the potentially hazardous zone.

The trooper received multiple reports concerning an erratic driver operating a black BMW M3 in proximity to exit 92.

After quickly identifying the vehicle, the trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver initially created a dangerous situation by blocking traffic.

After receiving instructions from the trooper to relocate to a safer spot, the driver continued to move his vehicle forward instead of pulling over. Eventually, he complied and parked the car before relinquishing his keys.

The driver was identified as 45-year-old John E. Jimenez of New London. Upon examining Jimenez, the trooper noted signs of impairment: he appeared disoriented, exhibited glossy eyes, and had slurred speech, struggling to comprehend simple directives.

Following his initial observations, the trooper called for backup and discovered that Jimenez had fallen asleep in the driver’s seat when assistance arrived.

Upon effecting the arrest, officers found approximately two grams of a purple powdery substance concealed in a clear plastic bag on Jimenez’s person.

When inquired about further narcotics, Jimenez confessed to possessing fentanyl stored in a bag found within the backseat of his vehicle.

A thorough search of the BMW uncovered 22.5 grams of a white powdery and rock-like substance, which authorities suspect was intended for illegal distribution.

Moreover, cash discovered in Jimenez’s wallet is believed to be linked to his suspected street-level narcotics dealings.

Jimenez now faces multiple charges, including operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs, failure to drive in the proper lane, sale of a narcotic substance, and possession of a controlled substance.

He has since been released on a $20,000 cash surety bond and is set to appear for his arraignment at the New London Superior Court on November 14, 2024.
