New Linux patch improves C0.x idle state of upcoming “Sapphire Rapids” Xeon Scalable processors

Positioned between POLL and C1, these new idle states offer a balanced mix of low latency and increased power efficiency. However, Intel’s engineering team has developed Linux patches for these C0.1 and C0.2 idle states in order to optimize the energy efficiency of the upcoming Sapphire Rapids processors. The update is part of developers’ longer offensive aimed at boosting VM performance under high I/O usage. The third version of the Sapphire Rapids C0.x idle status support was released on Saturday. The Patch notes summarize the work well and explains that these new C0.1 and C0.2 idle states provide an attractive middle ground between POLL and C1, with wake-up latency close to POLL and power consumption halfway between POLL and C1.

Intel’s internal tests have shown promising results: AC performance dropped by 13% and RAPL CPU performance by as much as 18% when comparing the percentage change from POLL to C0.2. The hackbench score also improved by around 4% in 4 groups with C0.2.
