New limitations from the US Department of Commerce on the sale of technology to Huawei

The United States increases the pressure on Huawei, the Chinese group world leader in the telecommunications market founded by Ren Zhengei. In fact, the US Department of Commerce has further limited the sale of US technology to China’s main high-tech company, Huawei Technologies, by revoking some authorizations for US chip sales.

“We can confirm that we have revoked certain export licenses to Huawei,” the Commerce Department said in a statement. The decision will prevent US companies Intel e Qualcomm to sell chips to Huawei for its smartphones and laptops, three sources told the Financial Times. The new export restrictions, first reported yesterday, come as Huawei faces renewed pressure from other federal agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission and from the Biden administration.

Meghan Harris, senior vice president at Beacon Global Strategies, said recent announcements regarding new Huawei products using U.S. technology were likely the “straw that broke the camel’s back.” Huawei has played an important role in the U.S.-China rivalry as the most technologically competent Chinese company and as a provider of Internet and telephone networks in virtually every country, including rural areas of the United States.

These networks are geopolitically sensitive due to the interest intelligence agencies have in the data they carry. US officials fear that Huawei devices may be more susceptible to infiltration by Chinese intelligence agencies than products from Western suppliers. Huawei has categorically denied helping the Chinese government spy. Despite years of efforts by the United States to hinder its advance, as of 2023 Huawei was still the number one company in the world by number of patent applications filed.
